{"id":35,"date":"2017-10-06T07:55:57","date_gmt":"2017-10-06T07:55:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dke.maastrichtuniversity.nl\/f.thuijsman\/site\/?page_id=35"},"modified":"2026-04-20T09:23:50","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T09:23:50","slug":"home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/dke.maastrichtuniversity.nl\/f.thuijsman\/site\/","title":{"rendered":"Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"auto-style3\" style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><b><span class=\"auto-style2\">Profile:<\/span><br \/><\/b>In 2014, I initiated the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maastrichtuniversity.nl\/research\/department-advanced-computing-sciences\/education\/keworkmarble-20\/kework-information-0\">KnowledgeEngineering@Work<\/a> <\/strong>honors programme, the preparation of which was supported by Limburg Economic Development funding. KnowledgeEngineering@Work, KE@Work for short, is a new educational approach in which our very best BSc students in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (previously know as Knowledge Engineering) combine their study fifty\/fifty with working on challenging tasks in nearby companies for the full second and third year of their bachelor. This program started in September 2014 and 2 years later we had our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maastrichtuniversity.nl\/news\/kework-first-10-students-academic-workstudy-track-graduate\"><strong>first 10 graduates<\/strong><\/a>. By now, we have signed 238 study-work contracts with \u00a0over 70 local businesses.\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span class=\"auto-style3\">In August 2020 I was the main speaker for the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.platformwiskunde.nl\/vakantiecursus\/\">Summer School on Game Theory<\/a><\/strong>, organized by the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.platformwiskunde.nl\/the-dutch-platform-for-mathematics\/\">Dutch Platform for Mathematics<\/a><\/strong>, with sessions in Amsterdam and Eindhoven. Please find an impression by two participants <a href=\"https:\/\/ymlp.com\/zGGKsQ\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>.<br \/>In April 2021, a team consisting of Katerina Sta\u0148kov\u00e1, Ralf Peeters and me, was awarded funding through <a href=\"https:\/\/us5.campaign-archive.com\/?e=%5bUNIQID%5d&amp;u=5e8a7cef1caab2a84a6543139&amp;id=4149a9c43a\"><strong>\u2018Science communication by scientists: Appreciated!\u2019 <\/strong><\/a>by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. Read my science communication blog <a href=\"https:\/\/verrijkinggewaardeerd.nl\/2022\/05\/wiskunde-verassend-voor-iedereen\/\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a> (in Dutch).<br \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span class=\"auto-style3\">In June 2023, the article <a href=\"https:\/\/dke.maastrichtuniversity.nl\/f.thuijsman\/site\/wp-admin\/edit.php?post_type=page\"><strong>KE@Work: Studying and Working at the Same Time<\/strong><\/a> featured in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maastrichtuniversity.nl\/news-events\/umagazine\"><strong>UMagazine<\/strong><\/a>. This online version appeared April 2024. <br \/>In January 2025, magazine De Ingenieur published a nice interview on our recently started PhD project on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/deingenieur.nl\/artikelen\/ai-als-detective\">using AI in fighting digital crimes<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0<br \/>In January 2025, this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maastrichtuniversity.nl\/news\/um-supports-university-burundi-development-bachelors-degree-programs-it\"><strong>press message<\/strong><\/a> was released on our project to support Burundi University in developing bachelor programs in IT.<br \/>In January 2026, at the occasion of my valedictory lecture, I was awarded the <strong>Medallion of Honour<\/strong> of Maastricht University, as well as the very first <strong>Frank Thuijsman Award<\/strong> by the Faculty of Science and Engineering of Maastricht University.
